Roofing Frequently Asked Questions

Roof Faqs

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes, we are both insured and licensed. This is VERY important! If your contractor is not insured, this forces you to serve as general contractor. This means that you are responsible for any property damage caused by the contractor and worker injuries that occur on your property. Similarly, if your contractor is not licensed, they will not be responsible for code violations – you will. Any code violations will have to be corrected at your expense.

How many different shingle colors do you offer?

Buildpro offers over 20 different colors to choose from. We also offer 5 Energy Star Rated Shingle colors options. To see some of our color option click here.

What are starter shingles?

Starter shingles are used while installing the first course of shingles (at the gutter edge). It is an additional layer of shingles that give added protection to that first course. All the shingles in the body of the roof overlap, therefore they have added protection underneath. However, the first course ends at the gutter edge and does not overlap an additional shingle. The starter shingles ensure that water does not seep through the seam on the shingle and penetrate to the deck or underlayment.

What is more important to consider when purchasing a new roof – materials or installation?

It is of course a combination of both, but we believe installation is the single most important factor in the life of your roof. Even if you use the best materials, improper installation can actually void the manufacturer’s warranty. Improperly nailed shingles will decrease the life of your roof and increase the likelihood your roof can suffer wind damage. Poor installation can also cause blistered shingles, mold and mildew issues, and moss and algae growth. It will also lead to a higher bill every time you open an envelope from your energy company.

What is ridge vent and do I need it?

It is installed at the ridge (peek) of the roof. A ½” will be cut on either side of the ridge, the vent will be installed and shingled over. If you choose this option, all roof vents will be removed and the holes covered with plywood. Also, if you decide to go with ridge vent, it is unnecessary to get an attic fan

What warranties do you offer?

We can install Owens Corning, GAF and IKO roofing systems and they have industry leading Limited Lifetime Warranties. You can see more details by visiting our Warranties page. Buildpro goes much further than manufacturer warranties. We offer a Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee.

You quoted to install a 15# felt and another contractor is suggesting 30#, why?

15# felt is used on walkable roof applications and 30# felt is used on steep roof applications. There is no added value of installing a 30# felt on a walkable roof. It is an added cost without any added protection. The reason the heavier 30# is used for steep roofs is because it is thicker and less likely to tear while our installers walk on it. A synthetic underlayment is now available and is also highly recommended.
